Butterfly – The Common Tiger

The Common Tiger, Danaus genutia genutia, is posed with its upper side outstretched and bottom wing perpendicular to its body, as if pinned in a collector’s box.

It is framed by its local host plant Cynanchum tunicatum, a climbing weed vine introduced from India that now grows across the island.

The Common Tiger has a few survival tricks in its bag: a striking colouration to warn of its poor culinary value, a vile taste to match due to toxins in its body, and a dramatic flair of playing dead until it is safe to be itself again.
